11. UNMC AND RURAL HEALTH CARE

The future of rural healthcare is being trained at UNMC in Kearney and these students need authentic formation in spiritual as well as physical health.

The first medical student cohort at UNMC in Kearney is expected to begin in the fall of 2026 and a student who is currently very active at St. Teresa’s is going to be in that first class. A young woman in the UNMC nursing program right now in Kearney currently lives in the Newman Center women’s house. In other words, UNMC in Kearney and the Newman Center are ALREADY collaborating!

UNMC in Kearney is expanding its health science programs for physicians, pharmacists, public health professionals, nursing, allied health programs, and research on the campus itself, as well as providing continuing education and professional development for existing healthcare workers across rural Nebraska. There are eventually expected to be about 600 students on campus.

The Douglas A. Kristensen Rural Health Education Complex is just a short walk from the future site of the St. Teresa of Calcutta Newman Center. So, among the students visiting the future St. T’s chapel, studying in the future St. T’s conference rooms, and relaxing in the future St. T’s courtyard…will be the future UNMC-trained, rural healthcare workforce.

Would you like for your future doctor, nurse, or allied health professional to have a vibrant faith life? Do you want them to have been well-formed in the 2,000 year-old teachings of the Catholic Church? Do you want them to have experienced being spiritually fed “at the feet of the Master” while they learn more intricately how the Creator made us?
